Spring cleaning tips for the new season

After a few months of cold and dreary weather in some parts of the country, many of us are looking forward to September. While spring means better weather, it’s also the time when everyone puts a little elbow grease in to clean out their homes.

Whether you’re going to list your property for sale with a real estate agent this season or you’re about to move rental properties, you’re sure to benefit from a good spring cleaning.

Here are a few tips to help you get your home looking clean and tidy.

Have a clean-out and a garage sale

Finding it hard to fit things into your cupboards? Perhaps you’re wondering why you own two broken fridges and one functioning one. Accumulating possessions is something that we’re all guilty of, and most of the time it seems like it happens without us even knowing!

The new spring season is a perfect time to reassess your belongings and cast out what you don’t need. This especially rings true if you’re going to list houses for sale in the new season.

If you’ve got a few items that are still functional and aren’t broken, think about hosting a garage sale to get rid of them. For those that are short of time, consider ringing up some charities to see if they’d be able to collect your items for you.

Get rid of dust and mould

During the colder months, it’s understandable that you may have had all the windows and doors closed to keep out the bad weather. While this helps keep warmth in the home, it may have also allowed a bit of dust to gather and mould to grow in certain areas.

Mould is something that many home owners might find a bit of throughout the home, especially after a prolonged period of condensation inside the property. But don’t fret – mould can be cleaned off!

To do this, simply use vinegar on surfaces to get rid of any mould. Alternatively, invest in a professional mould cleaning solution that’s suited to your particular surface – whether it’s curtains, floors, walls or windows.

Pay some attention to the garden

Pull out that weed-whacker and slap on some sunscreen – spring is the perfect time to put some hard work into the garden. Whether you’ve got a garden full of weeds, dead plants that didn’t survive the winter or an overgrown lawn, now is the time to sort it for summer.

If you want to plant something new for the upcoming season, there are plenty of choices! Strawberries, broccoli, lettuce, herbs, capsicum, zucchini and sweetcorn are all easy to grow in almost any sized backyard. For those w

ith only a little bit of space outside, consider pots, planters and hanging baskets.

Also check the garden for any flooding from the rainy weather. If you’ve identified any problems, you might want to put measures in place to prevent it from happening next winter.

Don’t forget the gutters

With all the rain the country saw over the winter, it’s likely your property’s downspouts and gutters need some TLC. Either hire a professional to take care of this for you or have a look yourself.

It’s important to clean out your gutters regularly, otherwise you might face overflowing or breaks once the weather turns bad.

Check your gutters for any blockages – twigs, leaves and other debris can easily accumulate here. Clear out any blockages and give your gutters a hose-down to remove any other remaining debris.

If you’re finding that debris build-up is a common occurrence, think about trimming back some of the trees that surround your property.
