Q&A with Camille Volckmar, Founder of ‘Morning Mates’. A local run club in North Turramurra that we are proud to sponsor.

By Sarah Bell

Q: Hi Camille, we first learned about Morning Mates when you approached us for sponsorship, and we thought it was a fantastic community initiative. What inspired you to start the club?
A:

Morning Mates started in May 2021, after we emerged from the first lockdown. I saw firsthand the impact COVID had on my friends and those around me, and noticed there was limited community support for young people in North Turramurra, with no real space to meet new people.

Running has always been my go-to for mental health, and something I loved doing with friends. I realised a run club that combined movement and community was the perfect way to bring people together, while having a positive impact on their well-being.

Since then, Morning Mates has grown into a community where people of all ages connect and start their Tuesdays with a smile. A number of friends joined me on this journey, and I’m so grateful for their support. They’ve played a big role in creating t-shirts and hats for the club, posting on our social media, and helping with hosting events.

What keeps me going is seeing the positive energy and engagement of people who enjoy getting together regularly on a Tuesday morning, despite the cold, darkness or sometimes rain. It’s magic.

Q: How long has the club been running, and how many people typically join each week?
A:

We’ve been running for nearly four years now, and each week we see around 20 people. Over the years, we’ve had so many different faces come through—most start as strangers but leave as friends.

Q: Where do you run, and how long is each session?
A:

We meet at the North Turramurra shops and run down Bobbin Head Road. My favourite part of the route is the lap around North Turramurra Recreational Area, where we catch the sunrise over the valley—it’s a special moment every time.

Each session is 30 minutes of movement. Some people walk 2K, others run 3K or 5K—it’s all about moving at your own pace, and then joining everybody for a coffee!

Some people walk and talk, some huff and puff, and some people chat the whole run!

Q: Do you need to be fit or an experienced runner to join? What would you say to someone who feels nervous about coming along?
A:

Not at all! Morning Mates is not about speed or distance, but encouraging people to be the best version of themselves. We don’t train for events, there’s no pressure and no competition. You don’t even have to run – you can just come for a coffee and meet new people.

Run clubs can feel intimidating at first, and it’s natural to be nervous. But we all started as strangers, and someone will always introduce themselves and run alongside you.

Q: Beyond exercise and fitness, what other benefits do members gain from being part of Morning Mates?
A:

The beautiful thing about running is that it’s a great equaliser. It puts everyone in the same boat, regardless of who you are, your age or your ability. We’re all out there for the same reason: to move, clear our heads, and start the day on a positive note.

That shared experience makes it so much easier to connect with others. After the run, we extend that sense of community by sticking around for coffee, and to broaden it even further, we often host BBQs or trivia nights at Club Turramurra.

It’s a supportive environment, and that’s the real benefit people get.

Q: Is there a cost to join, or any ongoing membership fees?
A:

Nope, just a smile!

We’re really grateful to be supported by our sponsors, who allow us to create things like merch for the club, coffees when people need one, and fun events. The community has really embraced this, and it’s something that resonates with people. From our local coffee shop to sponsors like Ray White, we’re thankful for their support.

Q: Why did you choose North Turramurra as the club’s location?
A:

We chose North Turramurra because of Bobbin Head Road – it’s a flat route, with minimal traffic and a stunning sunrise. There’s convenient parking outside the bakery and it’s an easy spot to get to. The atmosphere of Bobbin Head Bakery, with its undercover outdoor seating and morning buzz, makes it a natural spot to gather.

Q: I’m keen to join! What’s the next step?
A:

Easy—just show up! We meet at 6am every Tuesday outside Bobbin Head Bakery – rain, hail or shine. No need to register. We welcome all kinds of people – people with dogs, people over 60, people under 20, people with disabilities, people who do run, and people who don’t run.
