Upper North Shore Bush Walks

From lush gullies to sandstone ridges and creekside trails, the Upper North Shore is home to some of Sydney’s most beautiful bush walks. Whether you’re looking for a short stroll beneath the gums, a family adventure through fern-filled valleys, or a longer hike with water views, there’s a local trail for every mood and fitness level. Here are some of our favourite walks to explore on the Upper North Shore.

1. Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head Loop (North Turramurra)

One of the area’s most iconic walks, this loop weaves through Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, descending from the historic Sphinx Memorial to the mangroves and waterways of Bobbin Head before looping back. Expect shaded forest, sandstone steps, creek crossings, and plenty of birdlife.
Distance/difficulty: 9.6 km loop, 3.5–4 hours. Moderate.
Why we love it: A classic local trail with everything, history, forest, water views, and a rewarding picnic stop at the end.

2. Gibberagong Track (Wahroonga to Bobbin Head)

A peaceful bush trail beginning in Wahroonga and winding down to Bobbin Head via rainforest, creek crossings, and a mangrove boardwalk. Perfect for those who enjoy a longer, immersive walk through varied terrain.
Distance/difficulty: 6.4 km one way (8.3 km return), 3–4 hours return. Moderate.
Why we love it: It feels like a true escape, quiet, lush, and full of native wildlife, yet right on the edge of suburbia.

3. Warrimoo Track to Bobbin Head (North Turramurra)

Starting near the Sphinx Memorial, this track follows Cowan Creek through tall gums and ferny valleys to the picnic grounds at Bobbin Head. It’s a beautiful, shaded walk with water views and plenty of wildlife along the way.
Distance/difficulty: 6.2 km one way, ~2 hrs 45 min. Moderate.
Why we love it: The mix of forest and waterfront makes this walk a standout, especially when you finish with coffee at Bobbin Head Café.

4. Darri Track (St Ives Chase)

A local favourite linking the suburbs of St Ives and North Turramurra through Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. The track follows a mix of fire trail and narrow bush path through peaceful forest and along small creeks.
Distance/difficulty: 4.2 km one way (7.7 km loop via road), 1.5–3 hours. Easy–moderate.
Why we love it: Quiet, shaded, and often empty, it’s the perfect everyday nature fix for locals.

5. Cascades Track (St Ives / Garigal National Park)

Descending through thick bush to Middle Harbour Creek, this track leads to the Cascades — a series of small waterfalls over wide sandstone rock platforms. Great for families and dog walkers, with shaded paths and plenty to explore.
Distance/difficulty: 3.5 km return, ~1–1.5 hours. Moderate with some hills.
Why we love it: The gentle sound of running water and the shady forest make this a calming weekend favourite.

6. Mueller Track (St Ives Wildflower Garden)

Set within the St Ives Wildflower Garden, this trail combines easy walking with beautiful bushland. It loops through wildflower-covered ridges, forested gullies, and past Phantom Falls. Ideal for families or a relaxed weekend walk.
Distance/difficulty: ~3–4 km loop, ~2 hours. Easy–moderate.
Why we love it: It’s a great all-rounder, peaceful, pretty, and bursting with native blooms in spring.

7. Two Creeks Track (East Lindfield to Roseville Bridge)

  1. A stunning bush track passing waterfalls, sandstone overhangs, and mangrove-lined creeks before meeting Middle Harbour. A long-time local favourite for its variety and scenery.
    Distance/difficulty: 6 km one way, ~2 hours. Moderate with some steep sections.
    Why we love it: A true hidden gem, full of surprises, from waterfalls to harbour glimpses, and right in the heart of suburbia.
